buy and eat some pistachios

In a previous posting, I wrote about asking the right questions. Based on this article below, I want to write about how to sanely and non-hysterically respond to a "crisis":

FDA says to avoid pistachios amid salmonella scare

So, the recommended responses are:

  1. Stop eating all pistachios and anything that contains them
  2. Throw out zillions of pounds of what are probably perfectly good pistachios
And here are some sane responses:
  1. Wait a bit before panicking as there have been TWO reports that MAY be linked to pistachios.
  2. Buy and eat some pistachios that are locally and/or organically grown from a small producer, rather than from some gigantic manufacturer that ships millions of pounds of them around the country every year.
  3. If pistachios don't grow anywhere around you, buy things that do to encourage the people that do so to create more and more variety in your local food supply. Remember, a local food supply is the best national security!
When's the last time you heard about a small, dedicated family farm having a massive product recall due to product contamination? Don't think small, family farms are scalable? If so, I recommend visiting this place called Europe, where people don't appear to be starving.
